NTEC Environmental Technology specialises in simulation and impact assessment, working mainly for the mining and water industries.

Our strength is in simulation of hydrological transport processes, mainly below the surface (i.e. groundwater). We have special expertise in surface water - groundwater interaction, and enjoy working on complex systems that involve coupled processes.

When we work with the mining industry, we work on:

  • Mine water supplies
  • Mine dewatering
  • Reinjection of excess water
  • Migration of plumes emanating from tailings storage facilities and evaporation ponds
  • Evolution of mine pit lakes
  • Planning for closure
  • Environmental impact assessment
  • Water and solute balances
  • Sitewide water balance models

When we work with the water industry, we work on:

  • Regional scale aquifers
  • Surface water - groundwater interaction

When we work with the other industries, we work on:

  • Planning for the remediation of contaminated sites

Increasingly, we hope to help managers to optimise the way they manage water systems. We have skills in formal optimisation methodologies, and seek opportunities to demonstrate how optimisation can add value by reducing capital and operating expenses.

To a large extent, our work is "environmental". We work with mining companies, helping them to predict the consequences of proposed projects, and in many cases leading them to redesign certain aspects of the projects, to reduce the severity and/or likelihood of those consequences. We regularly work with Government, reviewing proposals for mining projects, and helping Government and other stakeholders to understand the impacts of mining. We also work with Government assessing the environmental impacts of proposed public groundwater supply systems. We have broad experience in environmental impact assessment, having prepared complete Environmental Impact Statements for four mining projects, and worked on others. We have experience in stakeholder consultation, at all levels from heads of Government to local communities.

We have access to a wide range of software tools, for simulation and data management, and aim to become the consultant of choice in Australia, for challenging modelling projects within the areas of our expertise. All of our professional staff have skills in some area of science or engineering, together with skills in mathematics and software development. Unlike many "modellers", we know what lies behind the graphical interface. We aim to speed up the modelling process, by writing pre- and post-processors that complement current GUIs, and in some cases by modifying the algorithms of numerical models themselves. We can write programs and scripts in many languages, and are skilled in developing FEFLOW plug-ins, using FEFLOW's Interface Manager (Ifm).
